Event Overview

A strategic platform for dialogue between Ijaw stakeholders - academics, researchers, cultural enthusiasts, government representatives, traditional leaders, tourism professionals, artists, etc, from all over the Ijaw nation and diaspora to set a new agenda for Ijaw cultural renaissance, and celebrate outstanding individuals and organizations that have largely contributed to the preservation and promotion of Ijaw historical, traditional, and socio-cultural heritage.

The Ijaw Cultural Awards (TICA)

Recognizing and honoring outstanding individuals and organizations that have excelled and contributed appreciably to the promotion and preservation of Ijaw historical and socio-cultural heritage.

Participants

Academics, researchers, cultural enthusiasts, government representatives, traditional leaders, tourism professionals, artists, and more from the Ijaw nation and diaspora.

Event Background

A society with a weak cultural infrastructure where its people can no longer be identified by its cultural apparatus obviously risks disconnection from the very foundation of its social existence. Today, the linguistic and cultural resources of the Ijaw nation is clearly at the crossroads, and this is a crises situation that calls for urgent attention. To say that the totality of Ijaw Cultural heritage has suffered significant erosion over the years is simply stating the obvious. Ijaw cultural infrastructure is evidently threatened with extinction, and this is a sad reality that is very worrisome.

It is on the basis of the foregoing that The Ijaw Cultural Conference and Awards (TICA) is conceptualized and developed. The event is a veritable platform designed to bring together the full range of critical stakeholders to have a broad discuss on Ijaw culture and tradition and highlight the need for its revival and sustenance. It is a conference and award event that is focused at promoting Ijaw cultural awareness and preservation, and reacquainting Ijaw people to the essence of our cultural resources as a foundation for fostering sustainable development of the Ijaw nation. It is also designed to recognize and celebrate outstanding individuals and organizations that have excelled and contributed appreciably to the promotion and preservation of Ijaw historical and socio-cultural heritage.

Justification

Culture resonates through human life whether made in words, images, or music. The dynamic nature of culture and its overwhelming influence over man and society presents it as a fundamental element that shapes the overall developmental pattern of a people and their society.

The overriding substance in The Ijaw Cultural Conference and Awards (TICA), is defined by the dare need to discuss the revival and sustenance of Ijaw cultural heritage against the background of the sad reality that Ijaw culture is facing constant erosion and fastly dying off. The event is therefore an necessitated by the need to put the Ijaw nation back on its feet and offer to the world the integrity and vibrancy of its rich cultural heritage, and serving as a strategic platform to set a new agenda for Ijaw cultural renaissance to enhance the step-by-step movement of the Ijaw nation to greatness.

Objectives

  1. To create a veritable platform for critical stakeholders drawn from various bodies – traditional institutions, government agencies, experts in Ijaw cultural matters, the academia, historians, representatives of relevant international and local organizations etc. to explore the totality of Ijaw cultural infrastructure to formulate ideas and frameworks that will enhance the revival, sustenance and promotion of Ijaw historical and cultural heritage.
  2. To discuss and display the vibrant cultural resources of the Ijaw people in language, dance, music, education, economy, religion, literature, arts, crafts, cuisines, fashion, etc. as a deliberate attempt to revive and sustain the intrinsic Ijaw cultural values for global appreciation and recognition.
  3. To effectively and appropriately position indigenous Ijaw cultural infrastructure as effective tools for promoting unity, peace and social cohesion to enhance sustainable socio- economic growth and development of the Ijaw nation.
  4. To recognize and honour deserving individuals and organizations with The Ijaw Cultural Awards (TICA) for their contribution to Ijaw Cultural preservation and promotion.

Expected Outcomes

Activities

Conference

The conference will feature scholars, researchers, community leaders, etc. in different sessions for meaningful discuss and exchange of ideas and experiences on Ijaw culture and tradition.

Exhibition

An exhibition will be organized to showcase Ijaw historical, cultural, or archeological artifacts of great significance which will include; artworks and sculptures, pottery and ceramics, textiles and clothing, documents and manuscripts, ceremonial objects, etc.

Awards and Cultural Showcase

The Ijaw Cultural Awards (TICA) will be presented to recognized and honour outstanding individuals and organizations that have meaningfully contributed to the preservation and promotion of Ijaw cultural heritage. The awards event will be fun-filled, featuring Ijaw Cultural performances, and guests will have the pleasure to happily interact, network share ideas, and freely socialize for effective fraternization.
